    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super saw Wanted a smaller saw to cut limbs instead my 20” bar monster. Works great on limbs. Found myself cutting down big hardwoods and stumps. Lot more cutting power then I thought it would have. Great on fuel and very light

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Stihl Quality This is my 1st Still chainsaw and it is the best I have ever had. I went cheap before but never again. I only have one tree in my yard but it is a big mesquite that needs constant trimming. This saw just keeps on working.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Is Proving to be a Great little saw This is a great little saw. I've had it since Dec 2017 and have used it on multiple immediate demand situations. I'm not a contractor, so I grade my equipment by how well it performs on demand. For this saw, that means sitting up for a month or more at a time and starting and performing the job with no hassles. I've probable done this on 5 or 6 different occasions. Some reviewers have had concerns about the starting process. Here's how I've started with no problems.1# Move the brake forward2# Squeeze the throttle and lock trigger while moving the lever to the "choke" position. #All the way to the bottom). When this is done release the throttle and trigger.3) Secure the unit to the ground and slowly pull the cord. Do this however many times you need until the unit almost cranks.4) Now move the lever up to the half choke position #one knotch up)5)Next, pull the cord until it cranks.6) When the unit cranks, pull the parking brake back towards you to disengage.7) Now squeeze the throttle and the lever will move to the run position. Some instructions will mention pulling the cord only 2 times, but this is probably when the carburetor has gas in it. I drain the gas after every use, so the carburetor takes some priming- which is what you're doing when you pull the cord.I gave this a 5* assuming the immediate starts and great performance will continue, but I've only had it since Dec 2017, so time will tell real rating.

It handles everything I use it for from limbs to small trees. Like being able to see my fuel and bar oil level as well. All around it's a great saw

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Eastern NC THis saw is very hard to start--it is impossible to keep it running--it is back in the shop to be worked on again--I would not buy another one nor would I advise anyone else to buy one--Stihl used to be a quality dependable product--I have purchased two stihl products in the last 18 mos and neither one of them are worth a cuss! And dont come back and tell me that it is flooded--that is not the problem

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hard Starting I have two OLD Husqvarnas and they start EVERY time. I bought a MS170 Stihl and it is hard starting compared to my Huskies. I will admit that it is light weight and does a good job cutting once you get it started but if you are pulling the cord numerous times to get it to fire ---- you are not a happy camper!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mine throws the Chain Frequently I have one and use it for cutting brush around my small Central Texas Ranch near Gatesville, TX. It is a terrible chainsaw because it is unreliable. It throws a chain daily cutting brush usually 2" in diameter or less.I had good success with Stihl products in Galveston County, Texas. As such I bought this small one based on that experience with chainsaws and weedeaters in a flood control district. I took it back to Ace Hardware 2 or 3 times to get it worked on. Most recently, it has been throwing chains several times a day.The mechanic reshapened the blade and verified that the chain tension was solid. He checked the blade also, I used it for two hours and then it threw a chain again. Based on my experience, this is NOT A GOOD PRODUCT.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Hard to start. Takes forever to warm up and then if you turn it off for 5 minutes you have to start over at warming it up. Start die, start die, start die. Cuts like a champ when you finally get it going, but not worth the trouble. Only had it a couple of weeks, but I may have to get something else. I love my KMR94 trimmer, but the MS170 chainsaw is a major disappointment. I thought Stihl was sure bet, but I am rethinking that.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly made Purchased the 170 due to store recommendation. Used the saw 7 times and according to the store I purchased it from and Stihl themselves, the saw is unusable due to to chain brake failure and melted parts. The first time I used it I cut five small limbs from a peach tree and the carb ended up with saw dust in it. I had to take it in to have the carb cleaned and serviced. I was told to be more careful. There should be no way for saw dust to enter the carb! I am no stranger to chain saws and how to use them and take care of them. I followed ALL the instructions for use and care. Stihl refuses to help and therefore I will NEVER buy another product from Stihl!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw Had some pine trees fall recently and it was cheaper to buy this saw than have someone else do it. Was even more impressed with the price when I compared other brands offered at the big boxes.Have use it a couple times and always starts on the second or third pull. Cuts through green wood with ease.Fantastic saw, wish I had bought one years ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only chainsaw you’ll ever need I bought this as my first chainsaw and I have a feeling it will outlast me. If not I already got my money’s worth out of it. It is lightweight yet I have turned 24” diameter oak and ash trees into firewood with this little “beginner saw”. Just sharpen the chain every ten or fifteen tanks of gas, which is easy to do, don’t force it through the wood, and it will keep on going. A chainsaw is one of these tools you don’t want to buy online. I had a problem early on, which turned out to be pure user error on my part, misunderstanding the starting procedure somehow. My Stihl dealer changed the gas free of charge, found nothing wrong with it, showed me how to use it, and sent me back on my way. I am near the end of my second gallon of chain oil, which probably translates to well over a hundred tanks of gas, and many cords of free firewood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great starter saw I purchased this saw for keeping 5 acres of Colorado mountain woods (Pine and Aspen) cleaned up and keeping me in firewood for the winter. The 16 inch length is fine for all but the largest trees on my property. This model (MS 170) is slightly underpowered for my needs. Not a reflection on this saw, rather my miscalculation on what would be required for this job. This saw is very light and nimble, can run it all day without fatigue. Low level of vibration, well balanced.I am so pleased with it, that I purchased a larger model (MS 291) this week. Between the two, I should be in great shape for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Homeowner saw I was looking to get a gas powered to replace my 14" electric and was considering another brand available at the big box stores. My brother, who has extensive experience with chain saws told me to stay away from the brand I was considering and suggested I look at Stihl. When I saw I could get a Stihl for a great price I jumped at it. The people at Thruway Ace hardware were great and the saw is every bit as good as advertised. I don't know how I would have made out with the other brand and now I suspect I never will.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Crappy saw regret the purchase A friend of mine recommend this saw to me. I needed something smaller for limbs and cutting smaller trees to compliment my bigger saw. They had me purchase the Stihl mix so I could get a 2 year warranty over the standard 1 year. Got it home excited to get some work done. Ran a tank through it and it was spitting oil out the muffler. Have about 5 tanks through it now and it won't idle. Very frustrating should have did what the reviews said and went with the Echo CS-310. Not to mention they have standard 5 year consumer warranty.
